Central Highland Discovery – Veterans Tour (#808)

Day 1: Pleiku – Arrival – Pleime – Ban Can (no meals)

Be welcomed by local tour guide & driver at Pleiku airport (5km far away from city central).
The central highlands are the most strategically important position during the Vietnam war.
Upon arrival, we set off on a drive southward highway No 14 to visit Ham Rong Pass and Camp Enari, which was the former headquarter of the 4th Infantry Division. The following war sites are Cacteka plantation, Pleime, and Ban Can. This village is the former operational areas of the 4th Division.
Drive back to your hotel, overnight at hotel in Pleiku.
The 4th Infantry Division deployed from Fort Lewis to Camp Holloway, Pleiku, Vietnam on 25 September 1966 and served more than four years, returning to Fort Carson, Colorado on 8 December 1970. Two brigades operated in the Central Highlands/II Corps Zone, but its 3rd Brigade, including the division’s armor battalion, was sent to Tay Ninh Province northwest of Saigon to take part in Operation Attleboro (September to November, 1966), and later Operation Junction City (February to May, 1967), both in War Zone C. After nearly a year of combat, the 3rd Brigade’s battalions officially became part of the 25th Infantry Division in exchange for the battalions of the 25th’s 3rd Brigade, then in Quang Ngai Province as part of the division-sized Task Force Oregon.

Day 2: Pleiku – KonTum – DakTo (B, L)

Breakfast at hotel.
Heading out of town we travel by roads to Komtum with a look of the former US DZ site where some French barracks are still standing. This rough mountainous area was once a violent battle field between the NVA units and the 4th Division along the Ho Chi Minh and Sihanouk trails. On arrival we explore areas of DakTo including the former airbase and the Chalie hill. We return to the town for lunch at local restaurant and visit the Old Wooden church and several hill tribe villages. Overnight at hotel in Pleiku.
Tan-CanhThe Battle of Đak To was a series of major engagements of the Vietnam War that took place between 3 November and 22 November 1967, in Kontum Province, in the Central Highlands of the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam). The action at Đak Tô was one of a series of People’s Armyof Vietnam (PAVN) offensive initiatives that began during the second half of the year. North Vietnamese attacks at Loc Ninh (in Bình Long Province), Song Be (in Phuoc Long Province), and at Con Thien and Khe Sanh, (in Quang Trị Province), were other actions which, combined with Đak To, became known as “the border battles.”

Day 3: Pleiku – An Khe – Quy Nhon (B)

Breakfast at hotel.
The impressive journey begins as we depart Pleiku and drive to Quy Nhon Town, which was a supply depot of the first Log Command. We cross over the Mang Yang Pass before traversing An Khe , a major military area where you could find the First Air Cavalry Division among other units. We head north to visit the petroleum farm , the ammunition dump and the strategic Bong Son Area. Along the way we pass by Phu Cat Airbase which is now managed by Vietnamese Army therefore no picture is allowed.
Overnight in Quy Nhon.
An Khe is a town of Gia Lai Province in the Central Highlands region of Vietnam. As of 2003 the district had a population of 63,118. The district covers an area of 199 km². The district capital lies at An Khe.Located on the main highway, QL-19 between Qui Nhon on the coast and Pleiku in the Central Highlands, An Khe was of strategic significance during the Vietnam War. From mid-1965 to 1968, the American 1st Cavalry Division was based there. The 1st Cav saw ongoing action in the war. The Army 25th Ordnance Detachment (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) also was located at the base camp and provided disposal support. Later in 1968 the 1st Cavalry Division relocated, and the Army’s 173rd Airborne Brigade took over the base camp.

Day 4: Quy Nhon – Nha Trang visit – beach extension at leisure (B)

Breakfast at hotel.
Today we make our way along the central coast though Tuy Hoa rice bowl towards Nha Trang. A part of the pleasure of traveling in this region is the simple joy of seeing the rice fields and the smiling faces of the people. On arrival in Nha Trang we enjoy a short city tour, seeing the Long Son Pagoda and the impressive Ponagar Cham Towers, which are overlooking the colourful fishing port.
Rest of time is free at leisure for your beach extension in NhaTrang.
Overnight in Nha Trang.
